Why is Desloratadine prescribed?

Clarinex is an antihistamine used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis).

If you have liver or kidney disease, your doctor should cut your starting dose in half.

How should you take Desloratadine?

Clarinex can be taken with or without food. Take it exactly as directed.

Clarinex RediTabs should be placed on the tongue, where they dissolve quickly. Take the RediTabs immediately after removing them from the blister pack.

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.

Store at room temperature. Protect from heat.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Clarinex.

Why should Desloratadine not be prescribed?

If Clarinex or the similar drug Claritin gives you an allergic reaction, you'll be unable to use Desloratadine.

Special warnings about Desloratadine

Do not increase the dose of Desloratadine or take it more than once a day. Higher doses have no additional effect on hay fever symptoms and may cause drowsiness.

The chewable tablet form of Amoxil contains phenylalanine. If you have the hereditary disease phenylketonuria this form of Amoxil should not be used.

Clarinex is not approved for children under 12.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Desloratadine

No significant interactions have been reported.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

The possibility that Clarinex could harm a developing baby has not been completely ruled out, and the drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Clarinex makes its way into breast milk. You'll need to choose between nursing or continuing to use the drug.

Recommended dosage

ADULTS AND CHILDREN 12 YEARS AND OLDER

For adults and children 12 and older, the usual dose is 5 milligrams (1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls of syrup) once a day. If you have kidney or liver disease, the recommended dose is 5 milligrams every other day.

CHILDREN 6 MONTHS TO 11 YEARS OLD

For children 6 years to 11 years old: The usual dose is 2.5 milligrams (1 teaspoonful of syrup) once a day.

For children 12 months to 5 years old: The usual dose is 1.25 milligrams (one-half teaspoonful) once a day. The dose should be given with a dropper that measures milliliters (one-half teaspoonful equals 2.5 milliliters).

For children 6 months to 11 months old: The usual dose is 1.0 milligrams (2 milliliters) once a day. The dose should be given with a dropper that measures milliliters.

A recommended dose has not been established for children with kidney or liver disease.

Overdosage

Little is known about the effects of a Clarinex overdose. However, any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
