What is nystatin and triamcinolone?

Nystatin is an antibiotic medication that prevents fungus from growing on your skin.

Triamcinolone is a topical steroid that reduces the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, redness, and swelling.

The combination nystatin and triamcinolone topical is used to treat skin infections caused by fungus or yeast.

Nystatin and triamcinolone topical may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about nystatin and triamcinolone?

Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended by your doctor.

If you miss a dose, use the medication as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and wait until your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Stop using this medication and get emergency medical help if you think you have used too much medicine, or if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Less serious side effects are more likely, and you may have none at all. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or is especially bothersome.

What should I discuss with my health care provider before using nystatin and triamcinolone?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have:

  • an allergy to steroids (cortisone);

  • diabetes;

  • herpes or shingles;

  • tuberculosis of the skin; or

  • chickenpox.

If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use nystatin and triamcinolone topical, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

FDA pregnancy category C. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether nystatin and triamcinolone topical passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How should I use nystatin and triamcinolone?

Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use the medication in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor.

Apply nystatin and triamcinolone topical in a thin layer and rub in gently. The cream can be applied twice daily. The ointment may be applied up to 3 times each day.

Do not cover treated skin areas with a bandage unless your doctor has told you to. Avoid tight-fitting clothes over treated areas.

If you are using nystatin and triamcinolone topical on the diaper area of a baby, do not use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse, after using nystatin and triamcinolone topical for 3 weeks.

Store this medicine at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Use the medication as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and use the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Symptoms of a nystatin and triamcinolone topical overdose may result if you absorb this medicine through your skin by applying too much of it. These symptoms may include weakness, nausea, loss of appetite, and weight loss.

What should I avoid while using nystatin and triamcinolone?

Avoid getting this medication in your eyes, mouth, and nose, or on your lips. If it does get into any of these areas, wash with water. Do not use nystatin and triamcinolone topical on sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, irritated, or broken skin; or on open wounds.

Nystatin and triamcinolone side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
  • weakness, tired feeling, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss;

  • a red, blistering, peeling skin rash;

  • severe burning, itching, or irritation;

  • new or worsening symptoms; or

  • easy bruising.

Continue using nystatin and triamcinolone topical and talk with your doctor if you have any of these less serious side effects:

  • acne;

  • dry skin; or

  • changes in skin color.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What other drugs will affect nystatin and triamcinolone?

There may be other drugs that can affect nystatin and triamcinolone. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
